With 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies to play for, everyone was excited. We initially had 11 male players in the draw and at the last minute, we added 1 female player.

When the draw was made, we tried to make it fair for the all the teams to have equal abilities. As it turned out, some teams were stronger than others! (You know who you are..... heheee)

From the draw, here are the teams formed:

Team 1: Isham / Nab
Team 2: Jester / Auntie (the only mixed doubles team in the lot! haha)
Team 3: Halfiq / Papz
Team 4: Bung T / Hj Bahar
Team 5: Jerry / Hj Besar
Team 6: Sui / Manon

The format of this one-night tourney was round robin where all the teams get to play each other. Straight sets win would give 3 points to the winner and 0 point for the loser while Rubber sets win would give 3 points to the winner and 1 point for the loser.

Since we had 6 teams altogether, each team will play a total of five best-of-3-set matches. This means at least 10 sets alogether. The matches were great especially in the beginning, but towards the 4th and 5th game, everyone was tired.

By the time all the teams played 3 matches, there were 2 teams that won all their matches at that point. This was Team 4 (Bung T/Hj Bahar) and Team 5 (Jerry/Hj Besar). When they met each other, an ensuing battle was in store. I didn't keep score but it went something like this: First set was won by Team 4 and in the second set, Team 4 was leading 18-12. Somehow, Team 5 found the will to fight back from there to win the 2nd set. Not an easy thing to do! In the rubber set, it was also a hard fought battle with victory to Team 5.

In their last games, Team 5 won comfortably against Team 2 (nanti kamu! haha) and Team 4 won their game as well against Team 6.

When the matches were finished, the standings went like this:

1) Team 5: Jerry / Hj Besar (with 15 points)
2) Team 4: Bung T / Hj Bahar (with 13 points)
3) Team 2: Jester / Auntie (with 10 points)
4) Team 1: Isham / Nab (with 7 points)
5) Team 6: Sui / Manon (with 3 points)
6) Team 3: Halfiq / Papz (with 1 point)

The matches went on until 11:30 PM! Very tiring indeed.

All in all, another great GNR8 Cup. Thanks to all the players and congratulations to the winners!

The event also marked the lauching of the new TEAM GNR8 jerseys.

Learning points

- Format of round-robin proved to take too long. With the upcoming Ramadhan month starting tomorrow, today's game became a sort of a farewell game. This pic was taken in Armitage Sports Centre.

The badminton scene in the UK is very different than Brunei. Together with Bung T, we've had our experiences playing with all sorts of players. From the novice up till some pretty good players (including British national ranked players). But I think overall, players in Brunei are better than those that we've met here.

There were also many memorable badminton-related moments in the time that I'm here. The highlight definitely has to be winning the Men's Doubles gold medal in the BruManch tournament with Bung T. That was really great. Also, participating in those other tournaments in which we gained valuable experiences. Playing here is also nice in the sense that you don't get to sweat profusely as in back home. That's one of the things that will be missed. The other being Pizza Co.'s spicy wings and chips!!! The badminton sessions in Sugden always have to be concluded with those succulent wings and bbq sauce. Hehehe. Talk about mixing sports with food.

In the last few months, we've also made friends with some Chinese players who are working here in Manchester. I hope the gang will still continue to play on a regular basis. All in all, I had a great badminton experience here in Manchester. Hope to be able to play here again in the future!

Arc Saber 10

Got hand-delivered the Yonex Arc Saber 10 today (Cheers Bung T). This is actually my first purchase of a high performance racket from Yonex.

Overall, I prefer rackets that are light, easy to control and highly strung (good for smashes). Used to own a Pro Kennex Boron (excellent racket with a sad demise), but now play with Prince Oversize Gold and Wilson V2 as back-up. Both rackets are really good with a preference for the Prince racket. So, I shall see how the Arc Saber feels. First impression is that it's light and feels very solid.

A description for the racket reads something like this:

"Introducing the long awaited Yonex Arc Saber 10, one of the most technologically advanced badminton rackets from Yonex.

A new addition to the Yonex line of advanced level badminton rackets featuring Carbon Nanotube

        Features

Level: Advanced

Flex: Stiff

Head: Isometric

Composition (Frame):H.M. The 3rd tourney was the BruManch Badminton Open. After going through the round robin with relative ease (hehe, sorry Rip!) we found ourselves in the semi-finals. Then we surprised ourselves by going through the semi and went on to the final. Our opponents were considered to be the best team in the tournament, which means the pressure is on them!

The final, which was played over best of 3 sets, was hotly contested. First set was close, then we made some careless mistakes in the end and ended up losing the set 18-21. In the second set, we regrouped and won by a comfortable 21-16. The deciding set was really intense. The scores were very close apart until we were match point down 18-20. To add to the drama, had a leg cramp! Baik jua ada first aid with some magic spray. Somehow, we fought thru the next two points and got to deuce 20-20. Then, me with leg cramping and all, we won the next two points to clinch the victory and won the gold medal!!! Yezza! Not bad for the "veteran" dark horse in the tournament :-D

We would like to thank our supporters, "The Gallery Fan Club" for their valuable support and cheers! (muka sorang2 pun tense in the final haha). The supporters consists of Momox (from Keele), Physicsbatu (from Liverpool), Mirage268 (from Leeds) and Manchester's very own Mr "Kway Teow" and Miss s***bing.

Here's what they have to say:

"That was a really intense match with a lot of twist...Memang sengaja kali kan membuat ia interesting berabis....
1st set, really intense and very tight....the set was won by the opposition but it was a really a close one....
and the 2nd set, start tia come back...
Especially time deciding set atu with score 18-20, pikir hampa udah psal one of player yang injured, calf muscle sakit.....then after kana bagi magic spray atu, menjadi game atu wah...
sakali manang atu, nda sangka2 wah...thats the magic of the underdogs lah.....it also shows the mentality toughness of 'the vets'......."

Momox

"I've been appointed to be the cameraman for the day..It was a new experience for me..It gave me the chance to see the action up close..

The journey for the GNR8 duo started early in the morning..The group was arguably kind to them and they surely didn't take it for granted..They won all the matches and deservedly earned a match in the semis..

Considered as the underdogs..They had nothing to lose..After a well played match they managed to win it as well..Surely no one had predicted it at the start of the tournament..

An epic final was on the cards..David Vs Goliath..Team GNR8 was up against considered the 1st seeded team..A quick change of shirt to bring out the spirit of GNR8..

The first set belonged to "Roy" and fahme..In the 2nd set team GNR8 showed the performance which deserved their place in the final..

3rd set..an intense set..it had all the dramas..it was tight throughout..Trailing 18-20 came the turning point..Championship point..Jester had cramps..We all conceded to defeat..but not the players..After a quick spray to the muscle..They clawed back to deuce 20-20..They all have given their all and the GNR8 team showed their experience and maturity to win it 22-20..

A fairy-tale ending indeed..Congratulations.."

Physicsbatu

"Well being a participant in the same group, i was unable to show mercy. Indeed, in the preliminary rounds I need not mercy as I was "belasah'd" by these 2 duos, 21-5. We also lost to the runner-up of our group, which was a weird, since they lost to another group which we had defeated instead. Putting the shameful past aside, the Duo team went on to the semifinals, having a straight win all the way. Being the "Underdogs", they sure did raise some eyebrows and peoples attentions.

In the Semi finals, 4 teams were put aside against each other. The dynamic duo made it to the finals, having the semi-finalists putting up a futile fight. The finals however was in a totally different league. Donning the Team GNR8 jerseys, they march on to the court with pride. However, Bung Taufik and Jester lost the first set 21-18. Nevertheless, with heads held high, they managed to regain their momentum by winning the second set 21-16. The 3rd set was as epic as the move "300" itself, standing against all odds to the might of the titans. Both teams crept up the scoreboard point by point, inch by inch. to the point where Jester had an unexpected leg cramp (must've been the voodoo i cast on them earlier.....hehe) just as the score went to 20-18. However, with just a magic spray, they fought on and even managed to get into a deuce. By this point, people were starting to chatter their teeths as to who would win this tournament. Amazingly, against all odds they managed to return an explosive smash and score a 1 point lead. In the end, with the might of team GNR8, surpassing the Spartans, they won the game with 2 point lead, winning the gold medal. It was really an epic battle, having the outcome deserving of the performance they had shown today. Now, i'll crawl back to my loser corner, basking myself in the self pity of my own inability........"

Mirage268.......aka Arip

UK Tourney #2

Humbled.

That about sums up the 2nd outing of Team GNR8 in UK. Mana inda, the tournament was organised by Manchester International Badminton society so all the best players turned up. The skill level was even higher than players in the People's society's tournament.

The 'best' thing was that we were put in the "group of death" which, get this, included the top seeded players who are ranked 47 in the England National rankings. Hahaha, yeah like we needed more challenges. They were good but I was expecting much better.

Enough to say we were soundly beaten but definitely could have done better. Didn't do too well in the entire tourney. Never mind, just take in the valuable experiences I guess.

Hope the next one is better.

Team GNR8 in 1st UK Tourney

Now the story.

The People's Society badminton tourney was great. Exciting to see the highly skilled players in action. To be honest, we had no expectations when joining the tourney. Was even nervous, haha. Mana inda, meliat orang pandai and melatup-latup smash dorang, one can get easily nervous indeed! The format was round robin with 4 teams in one group. So, we played 3 games in total.

The first one was more about battling nerves. Lost to a team with equal level I would say. 16-21 was the score. The next game was more exciting. Our opponents were high on confidence and it showed. Pikirnya kami ani would easily roll over. Sekalinya tekajut dorang when we won 21-19.
Yeehaa! That was cool. The victory was even sweeter when we learned that one of them played for the university team! heheh. The last game was against the favourite of our group who ended up going to the semi finals. We just did our best and got a respectable 15-21 against them.

The final was a really good and exciting game between two superb teams. Each team has one player who is very highly skilled. Great smashes, killer dropshots and great defence. One was an Indonesian player who joined some sort of junior scheme.

There's a clip of the final. Will try to post it later. Insha Allah.

Pic of the day:

Apparently, our coach is Mr. M. Recently we had a surprise visitor from Dundee, Scotland. It was none other than Mr Manon himself. How far he travelled to find peace and tranquility ;-) Took the opportunity to have a game here in Manchester. It was a familiar sight indeed seeing Mr Manon's serve heheh (sorry, jan mare) Hope you enjoyed ur game here and hope we'll be able to return the favour and play in the Scottish courts soon. And oh, don't forget the food fest. Yezza.

In other badminton news, training is in session for (hopefully) upcoming badminton tourney here in Manchester. Have to be ready for that one, Bung.

Post from UK

This post is waaayyyyy overdue.

Apologies to the faithful readers. For those who have left or thinking "eh, lama jua inda be-update", please COME BACK! We need readers.... (membari kesian jua ah....) Heheh.
Hopefully there will be more updates from now on. Hopefully.

In any case I would like to WELCOME BACK ALL OF YOU.

For my first post from the land of Fish and Chips, I thought I'd share some badminton stories from the UK.

Why UK? That's coz three of GNR8 members are currently here doing postgraduate studies.
Specifically, two are now in Manchester where we try to play badminton at least once a week (Wednesday). Wished it was more frequent that, but uni life is just not making it possible.

The venue is called Sugden sports centre. There are about 4 halls with about 16 courts. Court condition is okay. Really missed the green carpets of PGGMB and Centrepoint tho.

What is also noticable is that the players in the hall are mostly recreational. Guess the good players are playing in another day or maybe the level of play back home is just that much better, heheh.

The one sad thing also is that they are playing mostly using plastic shuttlecocks. Kesian eh :-) But don't really blame them tho. The price for one tube of feathered shuttlecocks is about 20 quid. That's about 3 times the price at home. So, for those who are thinking 19 dollars is expensive at home, besyukur sudah tu! (Tapi kalau dapat runding to 15 bucks for a yonex aerosensa 5, why not kan?) :-) I'm glad that I brought about 10 tubes from home. Imagine selling it here. Can make a quick quid or two.....

So, to the locals here, I'll leave them with this picture to inspire them. . . .

PS- Hopefully we'll hear stories from our other GNR8 member from Dundee. Matches were played on a round robin format and the team with the most points win.

Who was the winner? Let's just say yours truly was very happy with the outcome heheh :-) Way to go partner!

This was a cool experience and definitely one to keep as an annual event. Next year may see it played in a different country ;-)

To those who came close, don't be disheartened. Please try again next year. Come to think of it, we should have prizes for 2nd and 3rd places. (Budget constraint heheh).

I hope everyone had fun as much I did. Good one guys! It was a long fortnight with daily matches which lasted for about 3.5 hours per day. Since we had to be there every day, it was quite tiring.

The tourney format was round-robin and it all came down to the final matchday which happened yesterday. For the first time in the tournament, all 4 courts in LLRC were used at the same time involving 8 teams.

The atmosphere was Electrifying! There were no other words to descibe it. Cheers from supporters from all corners of the hall were enough to deafen.....but I was similing....

Smiled because all the preparations was worth it. I almost didn't care what the total points that my dept got last nite. I was happy to see everybody enjoying the matches.

Three of GNR8 members were actually there, Redvaee, SY and myself. Since my dept was against Red's dept, we actually met in a mixed doubles match. By chance? I think Red was planning it secretly. hehe. I think SY did well last nite. Lost to him in our men's doubles in a previous match when our depts met. I blamed it all on my partner : D (sorry M.H.!)

Mr. Apparent--ly also made an appearance last nite. Drove all the way from B-town to watch the final. Hope you enjoyed it man.

All in all, a busy 2 weeks but ended with a blast.

PS- Guys, we have 2 upcoming friendlies coming up. We knew these guys were good but last nite we learned that they were playing on a different level (jumping smash anyone?). We also learned that one of them was Sarawak's veteran champion! Redvaee should have warned us much earlier... We were just not ready for this kind of action, heheh.

It was fast and furious. No matter what our combination was, we still couldn't crack the Sarawak code.

Maybe Team GNR8 was holding back since we want to be such good hosts for our guests :-D

In any case, we still had a blast. Yesterday, I played in Liang-Lumut Recreation Club with my colleague and regular doubles partner. In one of the many rallies, there was shot that was in the "grey" area that could be rightfully played by either one of us (sort of half-court and locally termed as "bula tanggung"). Yep, you guessed it. We both went for the shot. I ran from the back of the court and my partner from the front.

I didn't even see him and only after the loud "crack", I realised that I was holding my racket which broke in no less than 4 places. After that, it was a blur.... My initial reaction was to see in horror that my dear racket (it was my dad's racket and my favourite for years) was broken. Only then I saw my friend putting his hand on his forehead and blood can be seen trickling from his face.... Everyone in the hall stopped playing to see what the commotion was about.

After everything calmed down, we realised that when I took my shot, my racket actually hit his racket and broke. The broken parts then had sharp edges which landed on his head and face. Fortunately (Alhamdulillah), it did not hit his eyes and the cuts were not deep.

Just goes to show that communication is very important in badminton. Shouting "Mine!" and "Yours!" could be the difference between having a safe & exciting game and a "Going-to-Bintulu-with-a-souvenir" game :-)

To my friend, million apologies. Glad you were still in good spirit after that and we even finished the game! Hope you get well soon.

PS- If anybody knows where to get Pro Kennex Boron 858 (Gold colour, Old Skool i know!), just drop by a note in the message box. Cheers.

1st GNR8 vdo

Guys, check out the 1st ever GNR8 video with footage from the 1st Friendly.

Courtesy of our very own Bung Taufik from Manchester, UK.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3WSZR9LPnc

Shuttlecocks - Get to know

For the casual badminton player, the shuttlecocks that are used is not really that important. You just try and hit it over the net and the game is on.

But as you play this game more and more, you tend to be picky. Which brand is better, what speed, which lasts longer, etc...

So, let's get to know this poor thing that has a very short life span.

Check-out for general info:

http://www.badminton-information.com/shuttlecock.html

Some additional info including Yonex shuttlecocks speed guides:

From http://www.tagsports.co.uk/shuttle-facts.htm

"Shuttlecocks are ‘weighted’ from 76 to 84 grains (in tubes of 12). Other things being equal, 73 is the slowest and 85 the fastest (heaviest). There are 7,000 grains to one pound (0.45 kg). As a quick guide each grain adds approximately 4” to the length of flight.

Yonex shuttles are numbered 2 (76-77), 3 (77-79), 4 (79-80) and 5 (80-84). I tried it once and I have to admit that it's confusing especially when playing doubles. Maybe it's because I am used to the 15-point system ever since I started playing this game. The new rule is that there's only one server at one time per team (no 2nd server) and every point being played counts towards the score.

Several drawbacks of the 21-point system includes difficulties in keeping scores and determine who serves next and who stands where. The other drawback (which I personally think is a major one), is that there's no "breathing space" where you can actually catch up if you are behind. There's no mercy for late starters. Part of the fun in badminton in the 15-pt system is that even you are 6-14 behind, there is actually still a chance to win the set. This chance depletes quickly if every point counts.

I guess some people do like the new system to save time (since sets is quicker) and rewards the players playing "steady" from the get-go.

Which one do Bruneian badminton players generally prefer?

Techniques - Badminton Grip

I would like to start a new feature on this site where certain key badminton techniques will be highlighted. I must say TEAM GNR8 looks good in the new jerseys :-) Overall, the score was 8-6 (sets) to the visitors, which is a good score considering it's our first outing. It was unfortunate that not all GNR8 members could make it last night. Nevertheless, the event was a success and both teams enjoyed the competition. From what I heard last night, this will be the first of many to come!

Bung Taufik will have lots of good memories to take back. Styling is understated but smart. Gen7 seems a bit disappointed. I guess he was looking for something louder like pink with lime stripes. Maybe next time........ then again maybe not. Too bad that the logo could not be added for now since we couldn't decide at the time of ordering. Will have to work something out soon.

So guys, we have the cool threads now. Details such as time and venue to be communicated to the team by the agreed focal points.

Next week there will be 2 game sessions which will serve as training for the friendly meet. Please refer to the calendar. It's 2 weeks away guys! Good thing it's a friendly hehee.

Just to inform all members to fill in the members details to be sent to me for compilation. It's a place where a group of enthusiastic Badminton players from Brunei meet to discuss all aspects about the game that we love. We are by no means professional players (although we wouldn't mind someday!), but this started as a group of friends meeting weekly to play a sport that we enjoy so much and would like to make it more interesting and fun.

Next to Football, Badminton is a very popular sport in Brunei. Although it requires skill, fitness and power to play competitively, it's also an easy sport to pick up from scratch. But most of all, it's a good way to interact and enjoy while exercising.

We are TEAM GNR8. Let the games begin.

PS- Don't know about the other members but I'm very new to this Blog world. Site may be too basic for some, but hopefully it will get better with time.
